Hong Yiu Thomas Lai
Hong Yiu Thomas Lai has shown a remarkable technique and elegance in his performance and has been able to add his own touch to the music.
Born in Hong Kong, Thomas is currently a student of Prof. Božo Paradžik in Hochschule Luzern. He received his earliest musical training on piano when he was five and violin at nine. He switched to the double bass under the tuition of Stephen Yam at twelve and started studying in Hochschule Luzern in Switzerland with Prof. Božo Paradžik since 2013.
Thomas has participated in different international and local competition. He got the first prize in the 2011 ISB double bass competition (14 and under division) and is also the first Hong Kong double bass student achieving this result in the competition. He was also one of the semi-finalist in the 2013 ISB double bass competition (15-18 division). In 2013, he got the third prize in the Hong Kong String Trophy, and was the only double bass player in history to get this honour. In addition, he has won numerous prices in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival and was awarded the DipABRSM of double bass by the Associated Board Royal School of Music in 2011.
To further extend his double bass technique, Thomas also actively performs in different master classes and performance. Thomas attended the Hong Kong Double Bass Workshop of Jeff Bradetich, the 2011 and 2013 ISB convention and the master class of Prof. Božo Paradžik held in the International Academy of Music Tibor Varga, and was given high appraisals by many masters.
